As you may know, I love Taylor Swift. I was recently listening to one of her songs that I had heard so many times before, but suddenly I understood it; my perspective on the song changed. This song, ‘Never Grow Up’ is a song off of her third album, Speak Now.
Suddenly this song spoke to me, most likely because now I can relate to it. With big things within my life about to take place, like starting University and moving 249.2 miles away from home.
This song, reminds us that life is short, that we need to make the most of the 18 years we have at home, with our family before it’s too late. I interpret the lyrics as a message back to a previous self, a younger me, embarrassed of my family and wanting to ‘grow up.’ We can all think back to a period in our teens, where we wanted to grow up, move out and start our own lives. Being embarrassed of our family’s, making our parents drop us off around the corner, so no one associate’s you with them.
But when you do finally grow up, when you do finally move out, finally start your own life, you will miss those times at home with your family. Those times you ‘dance around in your pj’s getting ready for school.’ Treasure your family time before it’s too late. Remember that your family are getting older too, you have to remember to make time for them, not to lock yourself in your bedroom. To venture out of your cave, down the stairs and spend quality time with them. Try not to fight with your siblings, remember their favourite songs before it’s all gone. Before you move out, before you’re all on your own miles from home.
So I’ve decided, this summer holidays, I’m gonna make the most of my time at home with my family. I’m going to make the effort to spend time with them, learn from them, before we’re separated in September. I advise you to make the most of the time with your family, before it’s too late and you feel like you wasted your time.
